Unpaid teachers strike in South Africa |
Unpaid teachers in Limpopo say their families are going hungry due to the ongoing public servants' strike action. More than 4 000 temporary teachers, who receive their monthly payments by cheque, have not received salaries for June.
Ndo Mangala, the provincial education department spokesperson, says that the strike is the reason the cheques for temporary teachers have not been collected.
Meanwhile, the National Teachers Union (Natu) says their members will not assist in catching up programmes aimed at making up for the time lost during the strike if government maintains its no work no pay principle.
Public sector unions have begun meeting their members for a new mandate regarding the latest government's offer of 7.5% wage increase. The unions will then continue negotiations with government this coming Wednesday.
